How much does a web designer cost in Croydon?
Real local prices, what changes them, and the questions that save you money

Ask five Croydon businesses what they paid for their website and you will hear five very different numbers, sometimes for very similar sites. That is not because anyone is lying. It is because "web designer" covers everything from a teenager with a Wix login to a ten-person agency with an office to pay for. None of these is automatically wrong. A market stall does not need an agency, and a national e-commerce operation should not be built on a £199 one-pager. The waste happens when a small local business pays agency prices for a five-page brochure site, or locks itself into a builder subscription that costs more over three years than a hand-built site it would own outright.
What actually moves the price
- How many pages and how custom. A one-page site with your services, photos and contact details is a different job from a twenty-page site with online booking.
- Who writes the words and supplies the photos. If the designer has to write your content from scratch, expect that in the price.
- Features. Booking systems, payments, customer accounts and anything bespoke move a project from hundreds into thousands, whoever builds it.
- Ongoing care. Hosting, backups, updates and changes are either bundled into a monthly fee, quoted hourly, or quietly missing from the quote. Ask.
- The overhead you are funding. An agency quote includes the project manager, the office and the sales pipeline. A freelancer quote mostly includes the work.

- Do I own the site and the domain outright? If the answer involves a monthly fee to keep your own website, walk away.
- Is the price fixed before you start? Hourly quotes on a vague brief are how £800 becomes £2,400.
- Who actually builds it? Some agencies outsource the build. You are paying local prices for offshore work with a markup.
- What happens after launch? Hosting, backups, and small changes: get the monthly number in writing.

What makes cheap sites bad is rushed cookie-cutter work, not the price.
Why do agencies cost so much more than freelancers?
You are paying for a team and its overhead: project management, meetings, an office, a sales function. For complex projects that coordination earns its keep. For a local business site, most of that money is not going into your website.
Do web designers charge monthly or one-off?
Both models exist. One-off for the build plus an optional monthly care plan is the cleanest: you own the site and can leave anytime.
