How to verify your Google Business Profile
The 2026 process including video verification, from someone who just went through it
- You no longer choose how to verify: Google picks the method based on your business type and data. Service businesses without a shopfront are usually pushed to video verification.
- Google's own guidance says video review takes up to five business days, and the video must be recorded live in the app in one unbroken take.
- Until you verify, you effectively do not exist in the map results, and the map results are where most local customers actually click. It is the highest-value ten minutes in local SEO.
Google now chooses your verification method for you, most service businesses are given video verification, and Google's guidance says the review takes up to five business days. Verification is the gate to the map results: nothing you do on your website puts you in that box, an unverified profile barely surfaces at all, and the process has grown stricter over the last couple of years. Here is how it works in 2026, including the video method most local businesses get, which I went through myself this summer.
The methods Google uses now
- Video recording: the default for most service businesses. You record your premises, equipment and proof of management live in the app.
- Phone or text: a code to the business number, mostly for established categories with existing data.
- Email: a code to a business email, less common.
- Postcard: a code posted to your address, still used for some storefront businesses, and the slowest at up to two weeks.
- Live video call: a scheduled call with a Google agent, sometimes offered when a recording fails.
| Method | Typical wait | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Video recording | Up to 5 business days | Default for service businesses; live, unbroken take in the app |
| Phone or text code | Minutes | Offered mainly to established categories |
| Email code | Minutes to hours | Less common |
| Postcard | 5 to 14 days | Some storefront businesses; slowest |
| Live video call | 2 to 3 days to schedule | Usually offered after a failed recording |
Which one you get depends on your category, whether you show an address or serve an area, and how much existing data Google has about the business. If you are a tradesperson, a mobile business or anyone without a public shopfront, expect video.
Video verification: what Google actually wants to see
Google's help page is specific: the video must be recorded live through the app in one continuous take, at least 30 seconds, and it must establish three things. Where you are: nearby street signs, neighbouring shops, or your service vehicle in a recognisable location. What the business is: equipment, stock, tools, branded materials, or the work itself. And that you manage it: unlocking the premises or vehicle, opening business software, or showing business documents. Blurry, edited or pre-recorded footage fails.
- Plan the shot list before you press record: street sign, premises or van, tools or equipment, then something only the owner could show, like unlocking the door or logging into the till.
- Keep it comfortably over the 30-second minimum. A one to two minute video that clearly covers all three requirements beats a rushed forty seconds.
- Do it in daylight, and narrate as you go. You are making a case to a human reviewer, so make it easy for them.
- If it is rejected, read the reason, fix that one thing, and go again. Rejections are usually about a missing element, not the production quality.
How long it takes
Google says video reviews take up to five business days. Phone, text and email codes are effectively instant once they arrive; postcards take five to fourteen days. Once verified, expect your profile to take a few weeks to settle into the map results as Google builds confidence in it. Verification opens the door, it does not jump the queue.
After verification: the part most businesses skip
A verified but empty profile still loses to a worked one. Fill every field: categories, services, service areas, hours, photos of real work. Then collect reviews steadily, because review count and recency are the strongest signals you control in the map results, and reply to every one. I have written up the full playbook in how to rank on Google Maps and how to get more Google reviews. And make sure the website your profile links to says the same things your profile does, the same name, the same number, the same areas; if you need that put right, that is exactly the sort of thing I do, from the web design pages.
Common questions.
How long does Google Business Profile verification take in 2026?
Video verification, the most common route for service businesses, takes up to five business days for review according to Google's own guidance. Phone, text and email codes are near-instant; postcards take up to two weeks. Some video submissions clear in hours if automated checks pass.
Can I choose how to verify my Google Business Profile?
No. Google decides the method based on your business category, whether you display an address, and the data it already holds. Most tradespeople and service-area businesses are given video verification whether they would prefer it or not.
Why does my business not show in Google Maps at all?
The usual reason is an unverified profile, or no profile. Search your business name in Google Maps: if nothing appears, create the profile at google.com/business and complete verification. If a profile exists but someone else made it, use the claim process on the listing itself.
My verification video keeps getting rejected. What now?
Rejections are nearly always a missing requirement rather than video quality: no proof of location, or nothing that shows you manage the business. Re-record covering all three elements explicitly, in one unbroken take, in daylight. If it fails repeatedly, the support flow can offer a live video call with an agent instead.
